Getting To and From Iowa City

Transportation to, from, and within Iowa City is a piece of cake. (See later culinary blog postings for details on where to obtain literal pieces of cake).

Getting To Iowa City

Iowa City is served by the Eastern Iowa Airport, a.k.a. Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Airport (CID), about 20 minutes north of the University of Iowa. Information on shuttles and other ground transportation options may be found here. Flying out is a breeze. A ten-minute wait at security would be considered long.

If you are driving, you will most likely arrive via Interstate 80, which passes two miles north of downtown. The most obvious exit would be 244 (Dubuque Street), but a major construction project is causing frequent traffic delays. It may be preferable to use Exit 246 (Dodge Street/Route 1). Route 1 passes directly by the Hampton Inn as well as the parking garage for the Sheraton and the Vetro.

Getting Around Within Iowa City

Downtown Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus are very walkable. Virtually all venues will be within an easy ten-minute walk of the Sheraton, the Vetro, and the Iowa House. The University’s free Cambus system covers the entire campus, but conference attendees will have little need to ride the bus.

The Hampton Inn is about a fifteen-minute walk from the conference venues. Iowa City Transit’s Westport Route stops nearby (Riverside and Benton) once an hour during the day. View the schedule here.

Getting to ALA (Chicago) from Iowa City

  • The Trailways bus depot is two blocks south of the Sheraton and Vetro hotels. The bus to or from Chicago should take about 5 hours.
  • Megabus service is currently available to and from Chicago; the bus stop is in the neighboring city of Coralville. Please note that service is sometimes discontinued during periods of lower demand.
  • RBMS is providing a one-way charter bus to Chicago for $55 on Friday; sign up when you register for the conference.

Safe travels!
