To provide all participants \u2013\n members and other attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staff and volunteers\n \u2013 the opportunity to benefit from the event, the American Library \nAssociation is committed to providing a harassment-free environment for \neveryone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, \ngender expression, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, religion \nor other group identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an association, ALA is strongly committed to diversity, equity and\n the free expression of ideas. These values have&nbsp; been repeatedly \ndelineated in ALA policy (for instance:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/aboutala\/governance\/policymanual\/updatedpolicymanual\/section1\/1mission#A.1.4%20Core%20Organizational%20Values%20%28Old%20Number%201.3.1%29\">Policy A.1.4 \u2013 Core Organizational Values<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/aboutala\/governance\/policymanual\/updatedpolicymanual\/section2\/40corevalues#B.1.1\">Policy B.1.1 \u2013 Core Values of Librarianship<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/aboutala\/governance\/policymanual\/updatedpolicymanual\/section2\/40corevalues#B.1.2\">Policy B.1.2 \u2013 Code of Professional Ethics<\/a>).\n Taken cumulatively, the values and beliefs delineated within ALA policy\n describe conduct based on a firm belief in the value of civil discourse\n and the free exploration of competing ideas and concepts \u2013 with a \nfundamental respect for the rights, dignity and value of&nbsp;all&nbsp;persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the context of ALA policy and the professional practices of \nlibrarianship, critical examination of beliefs and viewpoints does \nnot,&nbsp;by itself, constitute hostile conduct or harassment.&nbsp; Similarly, \nuse of sexual imagery or language in the context of a professional \ndiscussion&nbsp;might not&nbsp;constitute hostile conduct or harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ALA seeks to provide a conference environment in which diverse \nparticipants may learn, network and enjoy the company of colleagues in \nan environment of mutual human respect.&nbsp;<em>We recognize a shared responsibility to create and hold that environment for the benefit of all.<\/em>&nbsp;<strong>Some behaviors are, therefore, specifically prohibited:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Harassment or intimidation based on race, religion, language, \ngender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, \ndisability, appearance, &nbsp;or other group status.<\/li><li>Sexual harassment or intimidation, including unwelcome sexual \nattention, stalking (physical or virtual), or unsolicited physical \ncontact.<\/li><li>Yelling at or threatening speakers (verbally or physically).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Speakers are asked to frame discussions as openly and inclusively as \npossible and to be aware of how language or images may be perceived by \nothers. Participants may \u2013 and do \u2013 exercise the \u201claw of two feet.\u201d \nExhibitors must follow all ALA Exhibits rules and regulations and ALA \npolicies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All participants are expected to observe these rules and behaviors  in all conference venues, including online venues, and conference  social events. Participants asked to stop a hostile or harassing  behavior are expected to comply immediately.<\/strong>\u00a0Conference participants  seek to learn, network and have fun. Please do so responsibly and with  respect for the right of others to do likewise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Please go to the Registration Desk at conference if you believe you have been harassed or that a harassment problem exists. All such reports will be directed immediately to the Executive Director, who will determine and carry out the appropriate course of action, and who may consult with and engage other ALA staff, leaders and legal counsel as appropriate. Event security and\/or local law enforcement may be involved, as appropriate based on the specific circumstances.
